During a hot, steamy week in late August, 2009, over one hundred wonderful individuals from seventeen countries gathered along the Hudson in Garrison, New York, for the fourth annual Focusing Institute Summer School. During the week we attended wonderful workshops taught by Ann Weiser Cornell, Elena Frezza, Greg Madison, Kevin McEvenue, and Nada Lou. They guided us through a variety of Focusing related practices and studies including basic Focusing, Focusing as it relates to chronic pain and trauma and "Wholebody Focusing" as well as Focusing-Oriented Therapy and TAE (Thinking at the Edge). In addition, participants offered classes and workshops ranging from Focusing and Art to meditation and yoga. One afternoon and evening was spent with Gene Gendlin who answered questions and spoke about his Philosophy of the Implicit and TAE. Gene gave a powerful demonstration of Focusing in which it was clear that the volunteer who participated was not an object to be used for demonstration, but a participant in a deep one-to-one relationship. At the end of the week we had become a community, which was deeply expressed and felt during the last night's talent show, the Follies.
As I look at these photographs, I realize how many participants I didn't manage to capture with my camera, yet their faces and much more are vividly etched in my memory.
