Sherman House Stationery

My Sweet Sweets:

I am real fancy tonight. I am sitting at a nice desk in the Hotel Sherman while Leonard went to the barber shop to make him look his best. We are going to Gray’s later and we want to look real nice. Actually he always does.

I never thought I would keep a diary here but I think my letters are even more detailed than a diary.

Well, last Saturday we spent most of the night in the office. We even ate breakfast downtown before going home. Sunday I slept all day and we did not meet until 8:00 p.m. for supper.

Monday dinner at Mrs. Saunders. I finished the pullover from the ripped sweater and started a hat for myself.

hhorwitz

H. Horwitz Co,

On Tuesday we met downtown for breakfast. I took a beautiful silver vase Leonard bought for Mrs. Gray to have it engraved at Horwitz’s, the company Aunt Henny worked for at the fair. Dinner at Mrs. Saunders. Finished my hat, made 2 flowers and 1 bud similar to what I made at my test in the trade school. Wednesday I had to wait for 1 hour until the engraving was finished.

Wednesday: Dinner at Mrs. Saunders again. Change clothes: brown shoes, beige hose, beige new skirt, new crocheted sweater with hat to match, brown pocketbook, long beige kid gloves and navy blue coat. At 9:00 pm we went to Gray’s. I think I really looked very nice and never knew brown and beige would look that good on me.

We had some real nice warm days, but naturally that Wednesday when the birthday party was planned to be on the roof garden it was colder and raining. The party was anyhow very nice. I followed Papa’s good advice and had only 1 beer, 1 cocktail and a cup of black coffee.

I saw Len only when he brought me a plate with bread and cold cuts. He was sitting as far from me as possible with a few ladies and I far away with a few nice men, all kinds of professions including a newspaper reporter. It was very interesting and nice. We took 2 ladies home on our way. Leonard was trying to apologize for not being with me all evening but I assured him that for us 2 to be together we do not have to go to such a party. We went there to meet other people.

DoubleDecker

Double Decker

Please excuse my bad writing and making everything as short as possible. I am anxious to have this finished by the time Leonard comes back.

Enclosed I am sending you a petal of a rose I swiped and pinned on my bosom. It smells so wonderful, I want you to have a little part of it.

More explanation about Gray’s penthouse will follow with my next letter. It is too hard to do now. One of the nice things at Gray’s party is the fact we did not go home so very late. We left there already shortly after midnight. As a result I was not any more tired on Thursday than I am usually.

(Leonard has no car. He mostly takes taxis. He drove some years ago but had an accident and will not drive any more. I do not know what really happened, since I noticed he does not want to talk about it.)

Palmengarten

Palmengarten

Thursday: Ate again with Mrs. Saunders. We did want to go to a movie but the 4 films showing in our neighborhood we did not want to see – either one of us had seen it already or it did not sound good. So we saved our money and went to bed at 10:30 pm after doing some very neglected

Yesterday, Shabbos, I was again at Samuels and did not get home until 1:00 am. I often have that trouble going home from there.

Going I had a beautiful ride on the upper deck of a double decker bus, along the parks and the lake. The “Palmengarten” is very beautiful but no comparison with these parks for miles and miles. The Chicagoans do not really appreciate that beauty.

Sherman House

Sherman Hotel

Today I slept late, visited with Mrs. Saunders for 2 hours, then sitting in the sun on my bed I altered a dress and a hat, took off cape collar from my coat (it is too warm now), went downtown and picked up Leonard. Now after a good dinner I am sitting here in the lobby of the Sherman House, as I mentioned before. In the meantime only a toothache joined me.

I am glad Leonard left his fountain pen with me, otherwise I would have had to stop writing a long time ago. But that is it now. I am getting writer’s cramp, because I am trying to write real fast.

So now more next week.

A million greetings and kisses

My Good Sweet Dear Goldkind:

It is midnight and I just went to bed. But since I have not written to you in three weeks, I feel very conscious of guilt and will write now. Thanks for mail received. Hope you received those I sent.

On Wednesday, June 12, Leonard returned from a successful trip to the Illinois Supreme Court. We had dinner together but I went home immediately to alter a dress.

Thursday I had dinner at the family of my new boss.

Friday, June 14, I had Sabbath dinner again with the Samuels in Hyde Park.

Saturday, I had dinner with Leonard, then we stopped at his office and went home.

Trudel's Skates

Trudel’s Skates

Sunday, June 16, we had beautiful weather. I sat three hours in sunshine in a park. For the first time in 14 years I went roller-skating, but only 2 blocks. The shoes with the skates which I had borrowed were too tight. But it was fun.

Trudel on Rollerskates

After one hour walk we had a wonderful dinner and then we sat for about one hour in my room where I gave Leonard a fashion show of all my clothes.

Continued 7/3

Good morning. I fell almost asleep last night while writing.

Monday, June 17, I spent all day at home.

Tuesday, I had a date with Aunt Henny. After waiting for her for one hour I went home again. It was raining too hard – she could not come!!!

Wednesday I worked overtime and ate downtown. In my ½ hour lunchtime I got soaked shopping for a birthday present for Leonard.

Because of everything I did [in the past few days] my back and shoulders still hurt.

Thursday at home. Sewing.

Friday, June 21, Gwen and Eddy picked us up for a boat ride. Grace Gray had arranged a party of 12 people in the captain’s cabin. This boat trip took 2 ½ hours. I wore the altered chiffon dress, a new hat, white shoes, linen coat, white purse and gloves and a lot of makeup.

Afterwards we ate downtown in a very nice place. Unfortunately it was raining all evening.

LJG Plays Tennis

LJG Plays Tennis

Saturday, June 22, Leonard played tennis for the first time in three years and of course was very tired afterwards. We had dinner at a very nice rooftop restaurant with a very good with a nice floor show. Excellent orchestra and very good food, except that Leonard found a long, rusty nail in his steak. Fortunately he did not get hurt.

Sunday, June 23, I was with you in thought at the cemetery. [I believe that was the second anniversary of Trudel’s mother’s death. -Ed.]

Chinatown Squad

That day we spent time with Flora Mae. Also met Hans Kösterlitz. After dinner at a park, we went on a “merry go round” operated by foot and then on a “wippe [teeter totter or see-saw].” Leonard was 210 pounds on one side and Flora Mae and I (together) about 200 pounds. Up and down and down and up. It was hilarious.
On Gray's Roof

Flora Mae, LJG, and Trudel

We stopped on the way home at a movie, “Chinatown Squad,” and a very good stage show.

Sunday, June 30, We picked up Flora Mae and spent afternoon on Gray’s roof. Fireworks on way home. Weather very hot, too hot to even go swimming.

On Tuesday, July 2, I had a date with a nice girl from Nürnberg I had met at Samuels. She helped me tie together 43 little packages I had wrapped for Leonard’s 43rd birthday which is July 4 (tomorrow).

1000 greetings and kisses,

Trudelchen

Trudel’s translations and notes did not include a letter specifically mentioning what they did on July 4, LJG’s Birthday, but her photo albums did include at least one photo taken that day.

Letter to Erna to let her know that I mailed a record to Papa for his birthday and to ask Liss to catch it before he sees it.*

*With that single line Trudel only hints at a family legend. According to newspaper stories published much later, the record she sent was very special. She wanted to surprise her father with news of her engagement. One paper said,

In the phonograph recording room at Lyon & Healy’s store, one day . . . Leonard J. Grossman, former alderman of the Fifth Ward, asked a father 3,000 miles away for the hand of his daughter. Into the recording apparatus he spoke of his love. And the daughter declared that she would be happy if she could marry him.
The record was mailed to the father, Adolph Adler, former member of the German stock exchange, in Frankfort-on-the Main, Germany.

What the newspaper didn’t say, at least according to the story as I heard it many times, was that my father spoke in German on the record and Trudel spoke in English. It also didn’t describe my grandfather’s amazement and excitement when he listened to the record. Over and over again.

Rose Marie

From Rose Marie

We saw a very good movie, “Rose Marie,” with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.

We have seen several other movies because the theatres are air conditioned, usually 72˚ Fahrenheit which is a blessing in this heat. We always go early before the admission price goes up. Sometimes I go with Trudel Batzner,*** Claire Samuels, or Rose La Marque and of course Leonard, if he can take the time.

Wings over Everest

Wings over Everest

We saw “Wings over Everest.” Very interesting pictures from the first flight over Mount Everest.

Also “Love me Forever” with Grace Moore, and “Public Hero #1.” I dreamt all night about it. Next “Page Miss Glory” – nothing special. Then “Escape me Never” with Elisabeth Bergner. Next “Don’t Bet on Blondes.” Nice. Also “Dante’s Inferno” excellent, but I saw ghosts all night. Next “Frisco Kid” very exciting, but funny in 1 scene (for me) which played in the office of a stock broker. [Frisco Kid was funny to Trudel because her father was a stockbroker.] Then “Broadway Melody” very nice.

Letter from Leonard typewritten on his office letterhead

July 11, 1936
Dear Father Adler, Lottie and Erna:

Many thanks for your lovely birthday letters which arrived via Zeppelin July 3rd. Both Trudel dear and I enjoyed them. Soon after your letter arrived Trudel came into the office, and we read your letters together. At midnight, just as July 4th began, Trudel gave me the loveliest fountain pen. Said she was sorry she could not give me more. It was enough, with her beautiful love. Can you imagine my surprise on arriving home to find a whole table covered with presents from our “Goldkind”?

There was an Angel Food Cake, with 45 on it and 15 candles and 45 flags. It tasted as good as it looked. A lovely belt, handkerchiefs, cigar holder, pajamas, pipe tobacco, and just lots of other lovely gifts, all from darling “Drekbalch”**** But I don’t think that last name fits Trudelchen. Received a birthday card from Henny that was very clever, wires and letters from friends, and we had a lovely birthday dinner at L’Alglon. It is hot here, very hot. We jumped in the lake for a swim last night. Trudel looks stunning in her new and pretty dresses, but like the Goddess Venus in her bathing suit, and she swims like Neptune’s daughter. You know Neptune was the old God of the Sea.

Trudel and Leonard

Trudel and Leonard

Am leaving the city for one week, and before going wanted this letter to go on to you, thanking you from the bottom of my heart, not only for the letters you each so lovingly sent me, but also for the flower from your family garden, which is the flower of my heart and life, my future wife, Trudel. And this year we will be wed. There is much more to write, but Trudel dear tells me she has written you. She is coming down for the theater now, so I must get ready for her. The air is ice cooled on hot days in our theaters, so it is a good place to spend a hot night.

With a heart full of love and thanks to each of you, in which my precious Trudel joins,

Affectionately your son and brother
Leonard.

[Handwritten on reverse:]

Dear Sisters:
Trudel and I are in the Normandie Inn at 1 a.m. Sunday – a.m. is Sunday morning – that is a.m. means morning – after midnight from the Latin ante-meridians.
I just had to open our letter to you for 2 reasons. First each of you are one of the reasons each because your English letters to me were priceless and such letters in English deserve a special thank you. Then there were some wonderful presents Trudel gave me – too many to mention but I must not be silent about the 1) constitution of the United States, 2) the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, the first birthday of our country, 3) President Lincoln’s great Gettysburg Address written in his own handwriting – all beautifully framed for 2 large panels on my office wall – a glorious set of gifts by themselves. And again – a hug and a kiss to each of you for your loving thoughtfulness in writing English.

Devotedly your brother,

Leonard

Scroll below these notes to find links to clips, trailers and complete movies of some of the films mentioned above.

*Dr. Francis Townsend, a soft-spoken doctor with a senior citizens following, preached the Depression could be ended by giving government pensions to people over 60, thus freeing up jobs for unemployed young people. Unfortunately he was eventually co-opted by the infamous Father Charles Coughlin and Gerlald M. K. Smith in their campaign against President Roosevelt’s reelection. See Francis Townsend – The Man with a Plan on the Pardon Power blog, and Where Left Meets Right, by Ron Grossman.

**Leonard’s Birthday was July 4.

***This is Trudel’s first reference to Trudel Nachman, who became her closest and lifelong friend. Sadly, there is no account of how they met.

****”Drekbalch” is what is typed in my father’s letter. Perhaps Trudel used the term to refer humorously to herself or it is a very odd typo. I can’t find a translation.

July 30, 1937 – I arranged for a little party

July 30, 1937 – I arranged for a little party

July 30, 1937

Dear ones,
As you know we finally moved to a 2½ room apartment on the 19th floor of the LaSalle Towers.

La Salle Towers

La Salle Towers

On Leonard’s birthday, July 4th, I arranged for a little party, the first time in my life alone and in my own home. Leonard, who always told me he won’t have anything to do in the kitchen, has been a very big help since we moved here.

Although the apartment is cleaned by the building – maid service is included in the rent – he uses the carpet sweeper frequently and most of the time washes the dishes. He also went shopping for his party, going out 3 times and coming home with help since he could not carry everything, including a stepstool, carpet sweeper, can opener, etc. Besides enough food for a regiment instead of just a buffet dinner, well, we had enough to eat for a week. He is really very neat and clean except for his cigar ashes.

First Party

Trudel’s First Party

Doddo’s recipes and cookbook arrived just in time since I am preparing a big dinner every night and as you know I never cooked at all. Last week I had 10 people for dinner which consisted of the following:
Appetizer: tomatoes stuffed with egg salad, topped with anchovy and a little parsley, followed by real homemade chicken soup, then wiener schnitzel with white asparagus, Cucumber salad made with sour cream which is very hard to get here.

Franks on the beach

73rd St Beach

Flora, Madge and the Welches at 73rd St. Beach

For dessert I tried to make my favorite chocolate cake. Since I did not do my shopping in advance, I used a cigar box instead of a cake pan, lined with plenty of wax paper. Also I forgot to get plain wafers and had to use salt crackers, besides without a kitchen scale I had no idea of the difference between a German or an American pound. Well, by that time I was so tired and angry at myself that I just made a Jello, too. And the cake did come out so well that Madge asked for the recipe. I made It again when the Weils had dinner with us. I never thought I would enjoy cooking so much.

73rd St. Beach

73rd Street Beach

Madge gave me the recipe for Leonard’s favorite while driving, but I remembered enough to look it up in my new (old) cookbook. I made it that evening and Leonard emptied the whole platter of bread Krimselchen without leaving even a little crumb for me. I never taste my food while cooking.

The next evening we were at the Welches on their beach. Enclosed sending you 18 photos, most of them on the beach at Welch’s building. One day we went to the South Shore Country Club, one of the biggest, most elegant country clubs in the U.S. We had lunch there as guests of Aunt Flora.

One evening we had dinner at an old beautiful farm house a few miles outside Chicago.

I do not play any cards and have no intention to learn it. I rather sew and find many other more interesting things to do. After Leonard’s family left I spent an evening at Samuels again. They know of so many people who have come here lately.

Fortunately I am on a 3 week unpaid vacation. Otherwise I could not do all that.

In 6 weeks I will be a citizen!!

Please send me a silver toothpick for Leonard, but no electrical appliances – they are better and cheaper here.

Love,
Trudel

Movies from Trudel’s Sumter trip

In March, 1937, Trudel wrote a letter about her trip to Sumter, where she first met members of LJG’s extended family, many of whom came to Chicago and are included in the photos and video above. My cousin, Al, recently found the film I included in this post and a film of some of the events Trudel wrote about in March. I have added that video to the March letter.

Trudel originally began this letter by asking,” How do you like my new stationery?” Unfortunately I don’t have a copy of the original stationary.
